Rent My Apartment!

Apartment

I have a 1 bedroom 3rd floor apartment in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. I have the apartment to myself, and it is very nice, with hardwood floors throughout, good sized kitchen, living room, dining nook overlooking Golden Gate Park Panhandle (our biggest city park), and full bath. The apartment will be furnished while I am gone, complete with queen-sized bed in bedroom, sleeper-sofa (pulls out to queen sized bed) in living room, entertainment center with high-end stereo with 6-speaker dolby digital surround sound and ~100+ DVD movie collection, widescreen 26″ LCD TV, computer with 24″ widescreen monitor (can also use 26″ TV simultaneously). There is a wireless network in the apartment, as well as a laser printer and a scanner. There is a fire escape (not really a balcony, but sort of) where you can smoke, if you choose. This apartment is “loaded” with all of the amenities one would expect for a professional to be happy, and a student to be VERY happy. The kitchen will be fully stocked with staples (spices, oils, basic ingredients) and appliances. Leaving cable tv/internet access available is negotiable, but would run $45 each. The only utility to pay is gas/electricity which runs ~$50/month. San Francisco is an expensive city regarding housing, and so I expect the difference between your rent in Copenhagen and my rent ($1200) if you want to swap, or the full $1200 rent if you want to do a normal sublet.

Period

I will be studying from January 6th – Mid/Late June 2006 at Copenhagen University. That will be the rental period.

Transport

The busses to the beaches and downtown are two blocks away (2-3 minutes walk). There is very good access to public transportation. The trip to Civic Center takes 10-15 minutes, where MUNI surface and subway city transport and BART medium-distance train are accessible. I do not have a bike, as I take busses most of the time. A monthly bus pass for unlimited rides on BART trains inside San Francisco city, MUNI busses and cable cars is $45. BART outside of San Francisco is a few dollars. San Francisco has a city car-share program for short rentals, and there are many car rental companies for rentals lasting more than one day.

Local Neighborhood

The Haight Ashbury neighborhood is very funky, with many students, professionals, and working nearby. The local restaurant scene is ethnic, with Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Thai, and Californian cuisine available. There is a McDonalds by the park, but there is no reason to go there, with so many better alternatives. Bike rental and sales are available from a few vendors down the street. There is an alternative movie house a few blocks away, and two megaplexes a few minutes by bus (Civic Center and Japantown). There are two markets within walking distance, and Trader Joes Market, a local organic food chain is a short 1 block walk to a 5 minute bus ride.

The city

The city of San Francisco has attractions to keep you busy for years, so you probably won’t see everything, but there are museums, theaters, amusement parks (just outside city in Vallejo and Mountain View), many clubs and fantastic restaurants (running from very cheap to incredibly expensive). The Napa wine country is a short 45-60 minute drive.

Universities

There are five major universities (and other unmentioned colleges) accessible from this apartment: University of San Francisco (very, very close), University of California San Francisco Medical School (very, very close), University of California Hastings College of Law (civic center location, fairly close but not walkable), Golden Gate University (downtown financial district, 25-30 minutes by bus and/or subway), San Francisco State University (near the beaches in the Sunset District, 25-30 minutes by bus)

If you have any questions about the university, feel free to let me know. I am currently studying here for my senior year on leave from Berkeley. I have a handful of friends in the law department as well. But one thing you will enjoy is the price of housing in comparison to the Bay Area. $350 gets me a room that would cost at least double in Berkeley. Despite this, food and other necessities do cost a bit more.
